What Is an InBody Scan & How Does It Work?

The Basics of InBody Technology

The InBody scanner uses Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) technology to measure body composition. Here’s how it works:

  • Electrical Currents: A safe, low-level electrical current passes through your body to assess the resistance and reactance of different tissues.

  • Tissue Differentiation: Fat, muscle, and water each have distinct levels of resistance, allowing the scanner to calculate their proportions.

  • Segmental Analysis: The InBody scanner provides detailed data for each segment of your body (arms, legs, and trunk) to identify muscle imbalances and fat distribution.

What Data Will You Receive?

The results sheet from an InBody scan includes:

  1. Body Weight: Your total weight, broken down into fat, muscle, and water.

  2. Skeletal Muscle Mass: The weight of muscle attached to your skeleton, essential for strength and metabolism.

  3. Body Fat Percentage: The percentage of your body composed of fat.

  4. Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR): The number of calories your body needs to maintain basic functions at rest.

  5. Visceral Fat Level: Fat surrounding internal organs, which impacts health risks.

  6. Water Composition: Differentiates intracellular and extracellular water to detect inflammation or dehydration.

What to Expect During an InBody Scan

The Scanning Process

  1. Setup: You will stand on the device barefoot and grip the handles.

  2. Duration: The scan takes about 15-60 seconds.

  3. Results: You’ll receive a detailed printout or digital report immediately after the scan.

Key Considerations

  • The process is quick, painless, and non-invasive.

  • Results are most accurate when scans are performed under consistent conditions.
