Contrast Training

Contrast Training

Contrast training is the concept of using post-tetanic potentiation (PTP) training methods. It is the utilization of two training modalities typically programmed for separate training purposes, but brought together in an effort to enhance training outcomes.

A practical example of the PTP effect would be - if one was to lift a very heavy object and then within a short period of time (typically a minute or less) lift a lighter object, to find that it feels VERY light or weightless relative to its true weight. The effect is due to the recruitment of the very strong high threshold motor units while lifting the heavy object being recruited more easily and with less effort when lifting the lighter object. Although the lighter object does not require these higher recruitment the use of the higher output fibers, the nervous system is already conditioned to activate those fibers from lifting the heavier object.

Contrast training can be done in many ways, one of my favourite being wave loading. Another method is to use high intensity compound movements followed by a plyometric movement.

Example lower body training;

A1. Back squat 5x2 @3010 - Every 4 min

A2. Box jump 5x6 - Complete 60 sec after A1.

This example expresses a method of improving leg power and neural drive. In an effort to become, faster, stronger , and more powerful - try contrast training.
