The Power of Goal Setting for Weightlifting Athletes

Today we will delve into the transformative power of goal setting, inspired by the teachings of Bob Proctor. As a student of Bob Proctor's wisdom on personal growth and achievement, I invite you to explore the profound impact of setting goals in your weightlifting journey.

Let's harness the power of intention and unleash the champion within.

  • The Purpose of Goals: Paving the Path to Excellence

Setting clear and meaningful goals is one of the cornerstone of success in weightlifting. Bob Proctor's teachings emphasize the importance of creating a vision and aligning our thoughts and actions with our desired outcomes. Here's why goal setting is crucial for weightlifting athletes:

a. Clarity and Focus: Goals provide clarity and focus, enabling you to define what you want to achieve in your weightlifting journey. By setting specific goals, such as increasing your maximum lifts or improving technique, you direct your efforts towards tangible milestones, enhancing your focus and commitment.

b. Motivation and Commitment: Well-defined goals serve as powerful motivators, propelling you forward in your training. They ignite a burning desire within, fueling your dedication to consistently push your limits and overcome obstacles.

c. Measuring Progress: Goals act as benchmarks for tracking your progress and growth as a weightlifting athlete. They allow you to celebrate small victories along the way, reinforcing your confidence and reinforcing your commitment to the process.

  • Visualizing Success: The Mental Edge

Bob Proctor's teachings highlight the immense power of visualization in goal achievement. By vividly imagining your success as a weightlifting athlete, you can harness the full potential of your mind-body connection. Consider the following strategies:

a. Mental Rehearsal: Visualize yourself executing flawless lifts, with perfect technique, strength, and precision. Engage all your senses, vividly experiencing the feeling of success, the sounds of the weights, and the atmosphere of competition. This mental rehearsal primes your mind and body for optimal performance.

b. Overcoming Challenges: Visualization helps you anticipate and overcome challenges before they arise. Envision yourself confidently facing obstacles, adapting to adversity, and ultimately triumphing over them. This mental preparation equips you with the resilience and determination needed to push through the toughest moments.

c. Affirmations and Self-Talk: Incorporate positive affirmations and empowering self-talk into your visualization practice. Replace self-doubt with affirmations of strength, resilience, and unwavering belief in your abilities. This cultivates a mindset that fuels your determination and propels you towards your goals.

  • Goal Execution: Action Steps for Champion Results

While setting goals and visualization are essential, taking consistent action is what translates dreams into reality. Apply Bob Proctor's teachings on inspired action to your weightlifting journey. Consider the following strategies:

a. Strategic Planning: Break down your larger weightlifting goals into smaller, manageable action steps. Outline a training plan, schedule workouts, and establish measurable objectives that lead to your desired outcomes. This structured approach helps you stay on track and make progress towards your goals.

b. Training Discipline: Embrace discipline and consistency in your training routine. Stick to your plan, showing up for workouts even on days when motivation wavers. Your commitment to consistent training builds the foundation for exceptional performance.

c. Continuous Learning: Adopt a growth mindset and prioritize continuous learning. Seek out resources, such as coaching, workshops, or educational materials, to deepen your understanding of weightlifting techniques, nutrition, and injury prevention. Constantly expanding your knowledge enhances your performance and sets you apart as a dedicated athlete.

As a weightlifting athlete on the path to greatness, you possess the power to shape your destiny. By embracing the teachings of Bob Proctor, setting clear goals, visualizing success, and taking inspired action, you will unlock your full potential and become the champion you aspire to be. Trust in the process, believe in yourself, and let your goals guide you to new heights of strength and achievement.

Remember, greatness awaits those who dare to dream, set goals, and relentlessly pursue them.

PRACITCAL APPLICATION:

Team,

I want you to set a goal that is big, a goal that forces you to adopt a growth mindset, one that will light a fire under your butt for the entire off season as well as into the 2023-24 season. I want you to develop a clear goal that will push you to achieve great things over the next season. I want you to grow and to be forced to focus on what you truly want. Your goal must motivate and create clarity for your training and your efforts - it will commit you to becoming your best self.

Specifically, I want you to set a TOTAL goal (combined snatch and clean and jerk) that is based off of one of the following;

  • National or international ranking (International I, II, Elite, etc)

  • Qualification for an event (junior/senior nationals)

  • Record(s)

  • a Total number that is motivating (if no other numbers exist)

Below are multiple qualification totals to review and use as guides for your goal (Click to enlarge)

Youth International Markers

Junior INTERNATIONAL Markers

Senior INTERNATIONAL Markers

2024 Junior and Senior National Qualifications

2023 Masters Mens National Qualifications

2023 Masters Female National Qualifications

  • 2023 Masters Worlds Qualification Totals

NEXT STEPS:

Once you have a TOTAL goal it is now time to break this up into a Snatch and a Clean and jerk goal.

Lets say your total goal is 200kg in order to calculate your SN and CJ numbers, simply calculate your total by 45% to get a snatch goal and then take the total and subtract the snatch goal to finalize the clean and jerk goal.

Example: Lets say you are a 59kg junior female competitor and you wish to qualify as a International II lifter, which has a total of 165kg, you would;

Total goal / 0.45 = Snatch goal (165kg x 0.45 = 74kg)

Total goal - Snatch goal = Clean and jerk goal (165kg-74kg = 91kg)

This calculates a 74kg SNATCH and a 91kg CLEAN AND JERK with a 165kg TOTAL

If you are having trouble with deciding on a goal - please contact me for more info and I will make it for you, but this is a step you should take by yourself as much as you can.
